Lake Bulera and Rubondo

The busy town of Ruhengeri is superbly located at the foot of the volcanoes. In the city suburb, you can see the natural bridge of Musanze – solidified lava flow – which signals the volcanoes’ activity that shaped the landscape.

Not far from Ruhengeri you find the magnificent lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. Closer to the gorilla’s home, Lakes Burera and Ruhondo are real gems you must not miss. Their deep blue water is surrounded by high hills. From these come immense water falls that decorate volcanoes in a spectacular way. Through splendid excursions in the “land of a thousand hills”, you discover unforgettable beauty, sublime colors and a fantastic universe of Lakes Burera, Ruhondo and Kivu where many merry children burst into laughter.

Lake Kivu is the largest of numerous lakes which fill the valleys of Rwanda. Lakes Burera and Ruhondo, close to the gorilla-tracking centre of Ruhengeri, are often neglected gems.
People living around Rwanda’s many lakes try to make a living out of what these lakes have to offer. Amahoro Tours co-operates with a group of local people who use traditional fishing methods at the twin lakes Burera and Ruhondo. The work is carried out either from the lake shore or from self-made traditional canoes that consist of a single piece of wood.

A visit to an island, where you will get a boat or dugout canoe ride to the respective island in lakes Ruhondo and Burera. Enjoy the nice scenery and bring packed lunch and have a picnic at the island.
